Progress in life and at work starts with a goal. Goals, no matter how big or small, guide us and, like a compass, keep us on track. Of course, getting to your destination will take a lot of hard work and dedication. However, the first step towards the right direction is visualizing that goal. Like how the old adage goes: to see is to believe. Seeing the goal realized in your mind compels you to trust that your goal is real and achievable.
I’ve been using visualization to prepare for my dressage competitions for a long time. Did you know that your mind can not distinguish between visualizing a test and preparing for it in the arena? In either situation, the mind sees thoughts or pictures. It pre-conditions the body by seeing the desired result in my mind, making it easier to execute the routine.
Why does it work? According to science,
Visualization works because neurons in our brains, cells that relay information, perceive imagery as equal to a real-life action. When we envision a movement, the brain sends an impulse to our neurons telling them to “perform” the movement. This introduces a new neural pathway, which primes our body to function in a way compatible with what we imagined. Much of this happens without actually doing physical exercise, but the outcome is the same.
On top of this, you don’t have to be an Olympic competitor to reap the benefits of visualization. If you’re a student, a business person, a parent, or a spouse, visualization will help you stay focused on your objectives and improve your chances of success. Everyone has access to the power of visualization. All we need is to practice it and see the improvements. It does not guarantee success and may not replace hard work, practice and diligence. But if you add it to your routine, it will significantly improve your chances.
Visualize your goals now.
